This airport replaced the old Athens Airport which was called Ellinikon Airport. It is located around thirty kilometres to the East of Athens city centre. The airport was named in honour of the former Greek Prime Minister Elefthérios Venizélos who is a central figure in Greek aviation history.
There are two terminals located at the airport, a Main terminal and a Satellite Terminal (which can be reached through the main terminal). There are two runways.
