The 2nd airport is seen as possible competition for Athens International Airport. The main airport in Athens has come under fire recently for its high taxes rivaled only by Heathrow Airport in London.

The Kopaida region has been suggested as a possible location for the new airport which is about a 50 minute drive from Athens. The Greek Alpha Bank believe that the new airport could attract business from low budget airlines.
